Open Letter from Digital Economy Businesses to the Minister of Communications in Response to Recent National Developments

Date: 02 July 2025

A group of digital economy businesses have sent a letter to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, urging the removal of infrastructural restrictions.

According to the Public Relations Office of the Tehran Electronic Commerce Association, the letter states:

During days when the people of Iran were under the shadow of clear threats and aggression by enemies, and the country was engulfed in tension and concern (effects of which still persist), digital economy businesses—like all parts of society—feel obligated to stand in solidarity, demonstrate resilience, and continue providing services. In this effort, platforms, online stores, service systems, and technology companies, despite numerous limitations, have strived to keep the wheels of the digital economy turning while fulfilling their social responsibilities alongside the people.

However, unfortunately, at a time when the country’s economy needs stability and vitality more than ever, some technical and infrastructural restrictions have become serious obstacles to these businesses’ operations. One of the most significant limitations is the blockage of the Google Ads domain (www.googleadservices.com), a critical channel for directing user traffic to digital businesses. This blockage has caused a noticeable decline in sales, reduced website visits, and complicated customer acquisition processes, delivering a severe blow to the active and productive body of this sector precisely when economic resilience is urgently needed.

Most digital businesses, especially amid sanctions and domestic market restrictions, rely heavily on digital advertising services to reach their target audiences. Under such circumstances, it is expected that instead of adding more barriers, the lifeline for this strategic sector of the economy will be reopened.

While expressing our sympathy with the noble people of Iran and reaffirming our commitment to stand firm and continue service delivery, we demand that the restrictions imposed on the Google Ads platform be promptly reviewed and lifted. Furthermore, we urge that decision-making processes engage the capacities of associations and official representatives of the private sector to ensure that policies align with on-the-ground realities and the economic necessities of the country.

Digital businesses are the pillars of Iran’s modern economy. Let us not abandon these pillars in these challenging times.
